Maidstone have been rocked by news that striker Jamar Loza is out for at least four months.
Big things were expected of the Jamaica international this season but he goes into hospital for ankle surgery tomorrow (Friday).
Stones boss Jay Saunders said: “A lot of the damage stems from a previous injury.
“Realistically, you’re looking at four to six months out, which is a big blow and it wasn’t expected.
“I was hoping he was going to have a big part to play for us this year but it’s one of those things.
“From a previous ankle injury, there’s growths on bones and things out of place and things floating about.
“I don’t know all the technical terms but it’s not great.
“I believe after six weeks he can start running again but I’m anticipating about four months out.”
Loza rejected Football League moves to sign a new deal at United and was looking forward to building on his flying finish to last season.
Saunders added: “Jam’s gutted. This could have been a big season for him.
“When we spoke about him staying this year, he had a few options from Football League clubs but he wanted to stay here, have a real good season and see where it took him.
“It’s a big blow for us but also for him but everyone’s behind him at the club.
“We’re getting him the best treatment we can and we’ll get him back as soon as we can.
“He’s a massive player for us but we’ll get him back and when we do, hopefully he can go from strength to strength.”
Johan ter Horst was hoping to get the all-clear on his shoulder yesterday and could be involved when Maidstone go to pace-setters Sutton on Saturday.
