Dina Asher-Smith admitted it was a weekend to remember after she clinched a 60m silver medal at the European Indoor Championships in Prague.
The 19-year-old has been looking in fine form since the start of the season with a stellar set of performances at the Sainsbury’s British Indoor Championships that gave her the 60m national title.
And she showed that she will be a force to reckoned with on the international scene for years to come in the Czech Republic after running 7.10 seconds in her heat and semi-final to give her the chance to go for gold.
And the Orpington youngster looked every bit the part in Sunday's final as she held Verena Sailer at bay to take the silver medal in 7.08 – equalling the national record in the process.
While Dafne Schippers proved too hot to handle – crossing the line in 7.05 – Asher-Smith was delighted with her second-place finish.
“I'm so happy, it's a bit surreal right now because when I came in everyone was like you could do really well here and win a medal,” she said.
“And I thought I probably could but there's a difference between people anticipating that and then going out there and doing it.
“I wasn't really expecting to get any sort of record, everyone was saying you could break it or you could equal it but again it's a difference between people saying it and going and doing it.
“So I'm over the moon. When I was running I just thinking go to the line and I knew that if I wanted to be in with a chance of a medal then I had to be in it from the beginning because Verena and Dafne are so strong in the closing stages.
“But if I had a good start then it was likely I was going to be ahead but I probably needed to be a bit further ahead in the middle if I realistically wanted to win.”
