Charlie Mitten may have done himself out of a game by encouraging Maidstone boss Jay Saunders to sign Lee Worgan in the summer.

But the veteran keeper is happy to take a back seat to the man he believes is the best goalkeeper in the Ryman League, Premier Division.

Worgan arrived from Tonbridge after Deren Ibrahim was released and has made a series of vital saves to help United top the table.

Mitten, 38, said: “Jay spoke to me in pre-season and said he had the opportunity to sign Worgs and what did I think?

“I know my limitations now and how much I can play and I said he should definitely get him if he could. He’s the best keeper in the league, without doubt.

“It’s great for the club to have him and I’m enjoying working with him. I think there are games we’d have lost if it wasn’t for him."

Mitten helped United win promotion last season playing with a metal plate in the arm he broke at Leatherhead. He was recalled to the side following Ibrahim’s high-profile mistake in a defeat by Faversham and was as solid as ever.

He said: “I was still playing well but I know what my body can take now and I was pleased with the way last season finished.

“I’m pretty sure Jay is confident that if anything happens to Worgs, then he can put me straight in the side."
