Maidstone United manager Jay Saunders has no interest in National League table while his side are winning

Jay Saunders says he will only start looking at the National League table when Maidstone are losing.

Stones are up to seventh in the early standings after an impressive performance in a 2-1 victory over Braintree on Tuesday night.

But boss Saunders, whose side go to leaders Tranmere on Saturday, said: "I don't look at it.

"It's way, way too early. We just want to keep chalking off the wins or the points. If we can do that, then I'm fine.

"When we start losing three or four on the bounce I might have a sly look at it then but all the time we're picking up points then there's no real need to look at it."

Bobby-Joe Taylor's first-half double put Stones in charge against a Braintree side who scored an injury-time consolation.

Victory took their tally to seven points from four games and followed a 3-1 success at Chester.

Saunders said: "I'm pleased to get back-to-back wins, disappointed we didn't keep a clean sheet.

"I think we can play better than that but if I look back - it'll be interesting to see the highlights - I think we created a hell of a lot of chances and probably could have killed the game off earlier.

"I thought for a 15-20-minute spell, when we got our goals, I thought we were very, very good.

"We looked a threat, caused them problems, whether it be from set-pieces or from open play.

"I'm just disappointed with the goal at the end because I think we deserved a clean sheet out of it.

"I think it's a good start to the season to just have that one defeat, obviously I'm pleased with that and if you'd said to me at the start of the season, would I be happy with the points return at the moment going into the Tranmere game, I'd be very happy."

Taylor's reward was a telling-off from his manager!

Saunders said: "I dug him out a little bit. He's got himself two goals, which I'm always on about, but then I thought he was a bit sloppy in possession.

"He's better than that in possession and he knows that but I thought that was the story of our night, we created some really good chances but we could have kept the ball a little bit better."
