Captain Lee Worgan says Maidstone are keeping the season entertaining with an improbable title bid.
United moved back up to second in National League South after winning at Oxford on Tuesday night and are now 10 points behind leaders Ebbsfleet with three games in hand.
United are well placed to meet their pre-season target of a play-off place – they’ve opened up a 13-point cushion over the chasing pack outside the top five – and they’re having fun keeping favourites Fleet on their toes.
Stones came off at Oxford to news Ebbsfleet had drawn at Maidenhead.
Goalkeeper Worgan said: “I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have a little look at their result You’re going to have a look because what you want to do is keep the season entertaining and keep pressure on them. No one wants to be in a league where one team runs away with it.
“The closer we are to them the more secure we are in the play-offs but it’s that stage of the season where everyone’s looking at everyone.
“If we win our three games in hand, which is a big ask, we’re a point behind them.
“We’re going to aim for it, that’s what you naturally do but the play-offs is our ambition.
“Anything other than that is a massive bonus.
“We are going to keep pushing and looking above us and at the moment we’re picking up a lot of points and Ebbsfleet aren’t.”
Maidstone travel to former Ryman League, Premier Division rivals Wealdstone on Saturday.
