Jay Saunders said Maidstone got what they deserved against Boreham Wood.
United slumped to a 4-0 defeat at the Gallagher on Tuesday night with boss Saunders claiming as many as nine players were off their game.
The result ended their eight-game unbeaten run and saw them drop a place to seventh in the National League table.
Saunders said: “We got what we deserved out of the game. I thought Boreham Wood were the better side.
“You’re up against it if not enough players turn up.
“You can get away with three or four having an off-day but we’ve probably had eight or nine tonight and we got what we deserved out of the game and that was nothing.
“All over the park we weren’t good enough.
“I’m honest. I’m not going to stand here and say we did this well, we did that well. We weren’t good enough tonight.
“The players know it, I know it - we have to regroup.”
Maidstone had a host of players missing with Delano Sam-Yorke and Jai Reason suspended and Tom Wraight, Ollie Muldoon and Josh Hare injured.
On top of that, Saunders reluctantly started Zavon Hines and Jamar Loza, with academy boys Rhys Bartlett and Elliott Capel named on the bench along with Jack Richards, who’s only 18.
Saunders said: “It’s probably the youngest bench I’ve ever had but I’m not using that as an excuse.
“Obviously as a manager you want everyone available and still to this point I’ve not had that, which is frustrating.
“You could see Zav’s not 100%. I’m personally not sure if he was ready to start, Jam after playing 90 minutes on Saturday it was probably a bit much for him to have another start on the Tuesday but needs must.
“I’m not by any means blaming that on the result because the lads we’ve got out there are good enough players to get something out of it.”
