Sloppy defending marred what was otherwise a good performance for Maidstone boss Jay Saunders.
Saunders felt his side were well on top at Maidenhead on Saturday after recovering from Ryan Upward’s free header inside two minutes.
Blair Turgott’s fourth and fifth goals of the season turned the match the Stones’ way.
But the Magpies moved off the foot of the National League with Adrian Clifton’s leveller and a 90th-minute Will De Havilland own goal in a 3-2 victory.
Saunders said: “All three goals today were disappointing but I thought for maybe 70 minutes it was a really good performance.
“We had more possession of the ball but when you have that you’ve got to make it count.
“We’ve let in three sloppy goals and we don’t deserve to win it at the end of the day.
“I was quite comfortable in the game. Even at 1-0 down we still had the majority of possession and I thought it was only a matter of time until we got ourselves back in the game.”
Maidstone were unfortunate to see a Shamir Mullings header chalked off while leading 2-1.
Saunders saw nothing wrong with the goal and replays appeared to back him up.
He said: “I’d have to see the disallowed goal again.
“I didn’t see that there was anything wrong with that to be honest and even the fourth official agreed with me.
“At that point you go 3-1 up it’s game over but we couldn’t get that third goal and we’ve let in some sloppy goals.
“I don’t want to knock the boys too much. I thought for 70 minutes we were the better side but unfortunately games are not won over 70 minutes.”
Maidstone have dropped to 16th in the table and on Bank Holiday Monday host a Boreham Wood side who are a point and a place better off.
A second game in three days could lead to changes.
Saunders said: “We’ll look at it. There’ll be one or two no doubt that’ll have to have a rest but we’ll see.”
