Harry Wheeler said Maidstone conceded three of the poorest goals he’d seen in their defeat by Solihull Moors.
A week of preparation went out the window as Moors led 2-0 inside seven minutes at the Gallagher Stadium yesterday.
Danny Wright scored the first as Moors broke from a Stones corner and Adi Yussuf made it two after Maidstone missed the chance to clear.
Blair Turgott’s 11th goal of the season brought Maidstone back into the game but a defensive mix-up involving Lee Worgan, Alex Finney and Seth Nana Twumasi led to Moors’ second-half clincher.
Manager Wheeler said: “They’re three of the poorest goals I’ve seen at this level.
“You give two up in the first five minutes you give people a headstart and that’s exactly what we did.
“The man who scores the first one is marking one of our players in the box.
“His desire to get forward was better than ours but as it goes out to the wide player, it’s written in big letters in there, keep him down the line.
“First thing they do is let him come inside.
“We need to try and get them to keep absorbing information.
“If they absorb the information early they don’t score the first goal.
“If they absorb the information we constantly said about clearing your lines and not trying to play out in your own area, you don’t concede the second goal.
“We could go on. They absorb their information about dropping off and covering round when someone goes up for a header, they don’t concede the third goal. We’ve called all three of them today.
“They’re massively disappointed in there and I’m not throwing it all on to them.
“I’m disappointed that as a team their general play in between that was very good but they’re three really poor goals.
“If they go and score three great goals or even two of them, we go fair play, but they’re poor goals that are going to grate on us a little bit.”
Wheeler was happy with the commitment but there was no way back from those early goals.
He said: “The lads now need to shake themselves off, we take it on the chin.
“The work rate was brilliant, the attitude was excellent.
“Even at the end they kept going and they’ll do that but when you’re giving up gifts it’s a disappointment. I don’t need to tell them.
“This isn’t me having a go at them. They’re good lads in there, they know themselves.
“We’ve covered these areas this week and the goals were poor.
“You walk in there now, they’re all on the board. Exactly what to do, what not to do in all the general situations and we didn’t take them on board.”
