Blair Turgott scored again as Maidstone made it back-to-back wins with victory at Aldershot.
Turgott’s seventh goal of the season gave United a half-time lead and they defended brilliantly to see out the match as the Shots laid siege after the break.
Manager Harry Wheeler picked Jake Cassidy over Shamir Mullings in the only change from Saturday’s win at Braintree.
If Cassidy can’t get in Pools’ team they must have some decent strikers on the books because he really looks the part.
He holds the ball up well, brings others into play, wins his headers and is the sort of player Turgott can thrive off playing with.
All 13 of Aldershot’s points had come at the Rec and, as expected, they dominated possession in the first half.
They didn’t move the ball as quickly as in previous years, though, and instead were a lot more patient in their approach.
The Shots probed away but struggled to get in behind a hardworking Stones side who kept their shape well.
Efforts on goal were all from outside the box with Alex Finney blocking from Adam May and Worgan saving Adam McDonnell’s follow-up.
Worgan also denied Jacob Berkeley-Agyepong’s curler from distance and moments later Maidstone were in front.
The goal came in the 25th minute with space opening up for Cassidy whose shot was parried by Jake Cole and there was Turgott to bury the rebound.
Aldershot noticeably raised their tempo after the break and had the Stones pinned back.
Maidstone needed to have their wits about them and a fine block from captain Stuart Lewis denied May, then McDonnell hit the post from 20 yards.
United were on the ropes with some desperate defending, including a block from substitute Michael Phillips, keeping Aldershot at bay.
Stones looked to take the sting out of the game and it was good to see them be a bit streetwise, because it’s happened to them often enough in the past.
Worgan was eventually booked for timewasting while Turgott took an age over his substitution as the home crowd grew increasingly frustrated.
Aldershot kept knocking at the door, with Berkeley-Agyepong wasting a good late chance, while Will De Havilland headed off the line in added time.
