Two late goals saw Maidstone beaten by Eastleigh as their winless run in the National League stretched to 11 games.
United made a dream start when Johan ter Horst punished a mistake by keeper Ross Flitney after 30 seconds.
New skipper Stuart Lewis restored the lead after Ayo Obileye levelled and Maidstone were looking good until Lee Worgan's error presented Ryan Broom with a 79th-minute equaliser.
Oblieye went on to score again and Eastleigh survived a frantic finish to take the points, ter Horst with a big penalty shout turned down.
Maidstone’s opening goal was one for Flitney to forget.
He chested down a backpass then slipped, allowing ter Horst to pounce and roll the ball into the empty net.
United, boosted by the early goal, played good football in the rain, Jack Paxman at the heart of much of their best work in attack having retained his place and Seth Twumasi joining in from right-back to see plenty of the ball in the Eastleigh half.
Having start well, Maidstone were pegged back on 10 minutes after Worgan’s tip-over from Sam Matthews’ dangerous shot gave the visitors a corner.
Mark Yeates played it out to the edge of the area for Obileye to run on to and hammer home down the middle of the goal through a crowded area.
Depending on your point of view, it was a either a clever corner or United were slow to react but it certainly looked something Eastleigh had worked on.
Ter Horst did well to get his shot away after running on to a lovely pass from Lewis with Flitney down to parry as Maidstone threatened a second.
They were back in front in the 34th minute with a classic counter-attack goal.
Worgan gathered and threw the ball out to ter Horst who charged down the left and skinned his man before finding Paxman.
Paxman then fed Jai Reason whose shot came back off the post and there was Lewis to fire home the loose ball for his third goal in as many games.
Reason and Paxman fired over from nice moves early in the second half, with Yeates off target for the visitors around the hour mark.
A deflection took the sting out of Darius Osei’s strike after combining with Delano Sam-Yorke - perhaps just as well for the shaky Flitney - then Josh Hare’s diving header went wide and ter Horst flicked the ball past the post when played in by Paxman.
At the other end, Joe Anderson made a key clearance with Chris Zebroski ready to pounce in the six-yard box and substitute Ryan Creswelll nodded wide with his first touch.
Maidstone were looking reasonably comfortable when Eastleigh levelled in the 79th minute.
It was Worgan’s turn to make a mistake with the Stones keeper shanking a clearance to Broom who steadied himself and found the empty net from 20 yards.
Eastleigh when went in front with four minutes left and it was Obileye with his second goal after meeting Sam Wood’s corner in the six-yard box.
Maidstone threw everything at the visitors but couldn't level.
