Maidstone were thrashed by a Weymouth side who could afford to miss two penalties.

Chris Lewington denied Abdulai Baggie and Tom Whelan from the spot but the Terras had more than enough in reserve against a sorry Stones team whose afternoon was summed up by a bizarre own goal before half-time.

It was a fourth straight defeat for United, whose National South play-off hopes are fading by the week.

Andre Boucaud and Ibby Akanbi missed out through injury while Zihni Temelci was fit enough only for the bench as Maidstone made three changes to the side beaten by Hampton.

Lewis Knight, Sam Corne and Ify Allen were the players to come in as the visitors switched to a 3-5-2 formation.

Maidstone, held up in heavy traffic following a fatality on the M25, didn’t arrive at the ground until 2pm.

The last thing you need after a five-and-a-half journey is to concede an early goal but that’s what happened as Weymouth led in just the third minute.

It came down their right with the Terras capitalising on space with Dan Wishart injured in the other half.

They got away and Calvin Brooks cut inside and beat Lewington at his near post.

Maidstone cleared their heads, with a double block denying Justin Amaluzor, but Weymouth were on top and went two up in the 22nd minute.

It looked far too easy as the Terras broke down the opposite flank with Jaidon Anthony and Brooks combining to set up Ben Thomson, who finished neatly.

A minute later Weymouth were awarded a penalty after Ryan Johnson pulled back his man.

Baggie stepped up but a weak effort was easily saved by Lewington.

The Stones were struggling to string anything together, quickly breaking down, and a miserable half got worse with a calamitous own goal on 43 minutes.

Weymouth were on the attack again after Saidou Khan lost possession in midfield, with Ross Marshall’s attempted clearance crashing into the back of Johnson and looping into the net.

Another block denied Amaluzor at the start of the second half and Max Watters had a goal ruled out for offside before Weymouth added number four in the 55th minute.

Johnson conceded his second penalty of the afternoon, bringing down Thomson, and this time Weymouth scored with Whelan taking over spot-kick duties from Baggie.

Weymouth had another penalty on 69 minutes following a foul by Allen but Whelan couldn’t beat Lewington for a second time, the Stones No.1 denying him down the middle.

There was something for the travelling fans to cheer in the 75th minute with Corne pulling a goal back at the second attempt after his initial effort was saved by Calum Ward.

But Weymouth responded with substitute Jack Hoey lashing home in the 84th minute, Maidstone claiming the ball had gone out of play in the build-up.
