Blair Turgott scored again but Maidstone were held to a draw by Chesterfield.
The Stones were on course for a hat-trick of 1-0 wins after Turgott’s first-half goal - his eighth of the season.
But struggling Chesterfield grabbed a point through substitute Marc Antoine Fortune with 16 minutes left.
Michael Phillips came in for Olu Durojaiye as the only change from Tuesday’s win at Aldershot.
There was a buzz at the Gallagher after back-to-back wins but quite the opposite in the Chesterfield camp after 10 games without a victory.
Spireites boss Martin Allen, who’d been in the car park chatting to supporters half an hour before kick-off, kept things simple in a bid to halt their poor run.
It was a case of banging the ball forward to giant striker Tom Denton and looking to play off him.
It was a tactic that kept the Stones’ back three on their toes while they also had to deal with Sam Muggleton’s long throws.
Denton put a header over from Lee Shaw’s cross to the back post as Chesterfield missed a decent early chance.
Jack Paxman screwed wide at the other end before a clash of heads between Will De Havilland and Charlie Carter saw the Stones defender spend the best part of 10 minutes off the pitch to get bandaged up.
The Spireites created another good opening while the Stones were down to 10 men with Denton’s knockdown falling to Carter, who forced a good low save from Lee Worgan.
Maidstone didn’t create too much in the first half but Turgott only needs one chance.
He put them in front in the 31st minute after Will Evans made a mess of a header from Lawrie Wilson’s ball.
Turgott pounced on the mistake and eased the ball past keeper Callum Burton.
A superb reaction save by Worgan prevented an own goal from Simon Walton midway through the second half.
Turgott then almost had a second after getting between the centre-halves but Burton made the save.
The ball was straight back with Turgott whose tricky run and cut-back set up Stuart Lewis, with Burton getting a hand to the skipper’s fierce strike.
Chesterfield hadn’t really looked like scoring but were level on 74 minutes.
This time the Stones defence were caught out as Fortune got in behind and slotted the equaliser.
Wilson almost put through his own net soon after, Worgan saving his team-mate on the line, with Denton ready to pounce.
Burton made another save when Paxman played in Turgott, then Paxman fired across the face of goal as United pushed for a winner.
