Alessia Russo scored as England thrashed Norway to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Euros.
Russo came off the bench to add the seventh goal as the Lionesses won 8-0 at a packed Amex Stadium in Brighton.
The 23-year-old, from Maidstone, headed home a cross from Lucy Bronze in the 66th minute, as the tournament hosts became the first team to reach the last eight, qualifying from Group A with a game to spare.
It was a fifth international goal for Russo, who plays her club football for Manchester United, and one that saw supporters break out into a chorus of ‘Football’s Coming Home’.
The Lionesses, who remain unbeaten under the management of Sarina Wiegman, certainly showed their credentials with their record-breaking demolition of a Norway side who were fancied to fare well themselves.
Beth Mead scored a hat-trick and Ellen White struck twice, with Georgia Stanway (penalty) and Lauren Hemp also on target.
England play Northern Ireland, who are already eliminated, in their final group game at Southampton’s St Mary’s Stadium on Friday night.
If Wiegman decides to shuffle her pack, there could be a first start at the Euros for Russo, who also came off the bench in the Lionesses’ 1-0 win over Austria at Old Trafford last Wednesday.
