The former Welling man lit up a quiet second half, volleying home from 25-yards to break the deadlock in the contest between two clubs with 3G pitches and dubbed "El Plastico" by some locals, before substitute Alex Akrofi came off the bench to score for the second week running to grab the second late on.

Saunders said: "I knew Joe had that in his locker, he's got that bit of class about him, and was one of the reasons I went with him ahead of James Rogers.

"He always wants the ball, and even when we were going through tough times, he kept doing it, and was superb in midfield.

"He gave us a calmness there, scored the goal, and you won't see too many better this season."

Reflecting on the performance, Saunders added: "We came here expecting to get something out of the game and possibly win it, and I am glad the lads managed to do that.

"They did everything we asked of them and it was very pleasing."

He added: "It's great to get the first three points on the board, it's good for confidence, and gives everybody a lift.

"I said afterwards though, don't get carried away, it's one win in a 40-odd game season, let's just take it into the next game."

Skipper Steve Watt (hamstring) and Tom Mills (calf) picked up slight niggles ahead of the all-ticket home derby against Ebbsfleet on Tuesday.
