Jay Saunders reckons Ebbsfleet are laughing at the top of National League South.
Fleet were held 1-1 by a late penalty at Bath on Saturday but Maidstone missed the chance to go eight points behind them with three games in hand after a 2-2 draw at Wealdstone.
Twice United led, Joe Healy and Callum Davies the scorers, but they couldn’t hold on, while third-placed Sutton managed only a goalless draw against Weston.
Maidstone boss Saunders, while unhappy with his side’s performance, was frustrated at what he saw as a let-off for Ebbsfleet.
He said: “It’s a little bit frustrating but that’s the way this season’s been.
“I think Ebbsfleet must be laughing. Every time they drop points no one else seems to be able to capitalise.
“But it is what it is. We’ve had two good wins, you come here, another difficult ground, and you go, do you know what, a point away from home’s not the end of the world.
“I sensed in the warm-up we weren’t at it. We looked a bit leggy, a bit tired and I don’t know why. Maybe that carried on into the game.”
Maidstone were caught out from balls into the box for both Wealdstone goals, a concern for the manager, who has seen the defence look vulnerable since Jamie Coyle’s knee injury.
Saunders added: “If I look back over the game and the way we’ve played today, which I didn’t think was great, I suppose it’s not a bad point.
“But to come away from home and score two goals it should be enough to win us the game to be honest, especially when we got our noses back in front.
“But I didn’t think we were good enough. We looked tired, sloppy, defensively again we’ve conceded two rubbish goals but we’ve got to take the point and move on.
“It’s always a tough place to come, no doubt about it. It wasn’t a game where you could play loads of football, with the pitch the way it was, and it became a bit of a battle and I thought at times they were slightly better at that than us.”
