Kent golfers Tom Sherreard and Peter Appleyard lined up in the 137th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale today.

Maidstone's Sherreard, a 20-year-old amateur who is on a golf scholarship in Atlanta, Georgia, in the USA plays at Chart Hills near Ashford when in the UK.

He was one of five amateurs and carded a seven-over-par 77, finishing ahead of the likes of world No.2 Phil Mickelson, former Open champion Ernie Els and former Masters champion Vijay Singh.

Five-year pro and European Tour golfer Appleyard from the Wildernesse Club in Sevenoaks went out in the final trio at 4.21pm alongside Japan's Yoshinobu Tsukada and Brit Jonathan Lomas.
