Maidstone dropped back into the National League bottom four after losing at Solihull on Saturday.

Both goals came from corners in a poor first half - and United couldn’t recover.

Delano Sam-Yorke was nursing a groin injury, with Alex Flisher in up top, while Kevin Lokko came in for Jamie Coyle and new signing Joe Pigott was named on the bench.

There’d been an early warning when United didn’t switch on from Omari Sterling-James’ corner to the edge of the box, with Jack Byrne shooting wide.

They were caught cold again from Sterling-James’ second corner as Moors took the lead in the seventh minute.

This time the lively George Carline had time and space to do his thing, eventually working Lee Worgan before Joel Kettle finished the loose ball.

Stones, missing Sam-Yorke’s big-man qualities up top, seemed shell-shocked by the goal.

Nothing they tried came off and they looked second-best all over the park against a well-organised Moors outfit.

It was chalk and cheese from the superb display against Torquay last week and on 31 minutes they were two down from another corner.

Sterling-James took it again, with Carline getting a run to the near post and sending a thumping header past Worgan.

Maidstone turned to new signing Pigott eight minutes into the second half.

But they were fortunate not to go three down just after the hour when, from another corner, Carline’s shot was blocked on the line by his own team-mate, Harry White.

Reece Prestedge went close from the edge of the box at the other end while Anthony Acheampong worked keeper Nathan Baxter from substitute Vas Karagiannis’ corner as United looked for a way back.

Pigott was then inches away from connecting with Lokko’s header from Stuart Lewis’ cross.

Maidstone should have been back in it with 17 minutes left, Pigott winning the knockdown from Jamar Loza’s cross, with the ball dropping invitingly for Karagiannis whose shot hit the legs of Baxter.

But there was a big chance for Moors soon after, White running on to a through ball and hitting the side-netting.

Moors had several stabs at adding a late third in a goalmouth scramble before the ball went wide.
