Josh Staunton is ready for a new challenge with Maidstone after learning his Gillingham career
was over.
Staunton, 19, will be released by Gills at the end of the season after 12 years at Priestfield.
The young centre-half was given the news on Tuesday, a day after joining United on loan for the Ryman League, Premier Division run-in.
He was on the fringes of the first team under Peter Taylor but couldn’t force his way into new Gills boss Justin Edinburgh’s plans.
Staunton said: “Maidstone is a great chance to bounce back. I’m disappointed with the way it’s gone at Gills. I leave with a heavy heart but I’m thankful for everything they’ve done for me over the years.
“As one door closes, another one opens and hopefully I can get in the team at Maidstone and help them win promotion.”
Staunton wants to get back in the Football League but is open to an extended stay at Maidstone if things go well.
He added: “I’m looking forward to it here. Ideally, I’d like to stay in the league but Maidstone are a great club that’s going in the right direction and if something came up here, it’s a great option to have."
