Maidstone United manager George Elokobi has apologised for comments he made after Tuesday night’s game against Hampton & Richmond.
Elokobi said he was “truly sorry” for any offence caused by his post-match interview following the goalless draw at the Gallagher Stadium.
In his interview, the Stones boss spoke of his respect for fans who stayed back to applaud the players as they made their way over to the Genco Stand.
But he questioned those he felt were “walking away and turning their backs”, saying they were “not true Maidstone fans”.
Elokobi has now apologised.
In a statement, he said: “From the day I arrived at this football club, I was warmly welcomed into the Maidstone United family and as a player and now a manager, it’s a relationship I hold dearly – one of mutual respect and appreciation, win, lose or draw.
“On Tuesday evening, after the Hampton game, I was disappointed with the negativity of some fans when we went over to thank you all.
“Unfortunately, in the heat of the moment, I let my frustrations get the better of me and I am truly sorry if I offended anyone with my interview.
“I wear my heart on my sleeve, always have, always will. It’s got me in trouble before but believe me I’ve learned from this experience.
“To our supporters, let me say this. You are entitled to express your opinions – positive or otherwise – about our performances, I respect that 100%. To say negatives does not mean you aren’t a true supporter. I regret suggesting it did and I am sorry for any offence caused.
“In my time here, we have experienced the most wonderful highs and some lows too.
“Through those good times and bad, you have always been there for us.
“We all want success and as a management team we are working hard with our group of players to bring that success to Maidstone United Football Club.
“Please stick with us and continue to back our players every minute of every game.
“We look forward to seeing you at Chippenham on Saturday and here at the Gallagher on Monday. As always, we will show you our appreciation before and after the game.”
