Maidstone United joint-boss Lloyd Hume confessed the club dare not get it wrong in their search for a new striker.
He was due to sit down with managerial partner Alan Walker last night (Thursday) to sift through the names of hundreds of strikers contained on the Football League’s newly-published list of released players.
And despite their early summer spending spree, the pair still have room for manoeuvre within their budget to invest in the right man.
But Hume was at pains to stress they must get it right.
Hume and Walker this week discussed at length whether or not to sign a striker with a Blue Square Premier club before deciding against the move.
“There was an element of doubt and we dare not get this choice wrong,” said Hume.
“We are determined to be meticulous in making the choice because we cannot afford to find out within a few weeks of the season starting that we’ve signed the wrong man.
“There are literally hundreds of strikers on the list circulated by the Football League. We accept that many will want full-time football, which we cannot offer, then there is problems regarding location.
“But that does not preclude us from getting our man.
“Alan and I know the type of player we want. Someone like Luis Cumbers who has that ability to get behind defenders.
“But we won’t be rushed because this decision is so important. There will be no gambling on this one.”
