Maidstone manager Jay Saunders is trying to sign a new forward after bad news on the injury front.

Alex Akrofi has suffered a setback in his recovery from ankle ligament damage suffered against Concord a fortnight ago.

He trained last Tuesday and was expected to face Gosport at the weekend but broke down and turned up at the Gallagher with his foot in a protective boot.

Stones also have concerns over Jay May who, having recovered from a calf problem, was struck down by a suspected kidney infection that ruled him out of the Boro game.

That left Adam Birchall as the only recognised striker but he too had been ill all week and did well to last an hour.

Alex Flisher scored a late winner as a makeshift frontman but Maidstone want to use him sparingly after hamstring issues.

Boss Saunders said: “We’ve put a seven-dayer in for a player so we’ll see what happens.

"We are looking because if we get one or two injuries we’re short.

“It’s in the forward department. With Jay May ill and Akrofi, we’re not sure how long he’ll be out with his ankle ligaments, it left us with Birch.

“Flish can do it and maybe on that showing it might make us think we don’t need to rush out and get someone but again I don’t want to rush him back if we don’t have to.”
