MAIDSTONE United have made a seven-day approach for an unnamed striker as the hunt goes on for a replacement for Luis Cumbers.

Joint manager Alan Walker has revealed that Cumbers had turned down approaches from both Bromley and AFC Wimbledon to stay with Maidstone, before accepting Grays’ offer to play in the Conference.

"People have got to get over that," Walker argued. "The day before we agreed to let Alex Tiesse go on loan to Leatherhead, because he desperately needed match fitness, Gillingham told me Luis could stay for the foreseeable future, possibly till the end of the season.

"But Grays is local to him, it’s a Conference club and we wish him the best. If it doesn’t work out there he’d be happy to come back, but I want it work out for the lad.

"We’re always looking for players but there’s no point in rushing in and signing someone who isn’t up to it."

Harlow visit Bourne Park this Saturday and Chris Smalling’s return will bring some relief to the beleaguered managers.

Lynden Rowland could also return and Errison Ahwan emerged unscathed from the 2-0 midweek defeat against Hornchurch.
