Maidstone are trying to bring Delano Sam-Yorke back to the Gallagher.
They've made a bid for the striker who has returned to National League relegation rivals Woking after a two-month loan spell.
They attempted to push through a deal before Sam-Yorke's final appearance - a 4-2 win over Southport on Saturday.
But with Stones now three points above Woking, boss Jay Saunders doesn't fancy their chances.
However, that hasn't stopped them trying.
Saunders said: "He’s been good for us and we’ve been good for him and hopefully we can sort something but I can’t see it happening.
"We’ve kind of made an offer to try and keep him but he’s their player and what will be, will be."
Sam-Yorke scored three goals and became a firm favourite with Stones team-mates and fans, making a big impact as Saunders' side climbed out of the bottom four.
He said he would rather stay at Maidstone and was given a rousing ovation when substituted in the final minute against Southport, followed by a round of applause in the dressing room.
If Maidstone miss out this week, they are likely to make another move in the summer, when the striker is out of contract.
Saunders said: "He’s been a big part of what we’ve done in the last month or so and I’ve been really pleased with him.
"Hopefully it’s not the last we’ve seen of him, whether that be this season or next season I’m not sure.
"If you ask him, he’s probably got his buzz for football back again and I’m pleased we’ve been able to do that, as a team, as a squad, as a club.
"We’ve worked quite hard to try and get something sorted.
"He's Woking's player and, at the end of the day, that’s the way loans work.
"Garry Hill (Woking boss) was good enough to let us have him in the first place so you’ve got to respect that."
