Stones prepare for Dons clash

Hume says AFC Wimbledon will provide a 'mammoth test'

Maidstone United joint-boss Lloyd Hume is positive his side can beat AFC Wimbledon after watching the Blue Square South side oust Dover from the FA Cup on Tuesday night.

Tony Finn and former Chatham and Welling man Danny Kedwell scored for the Dons as they overcame Andy Hessenthaler’s side 2-0 in the 3rd Qualifying Round replay after Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Crabble.

The Stones booked a home tie in the 4th Qualifying Round on Saturday 25th with a superb 4-1 win at Halesowen on Saturday.

Hume and Alan Walker attended the replay to scout their potential opponents and left with mixed emotions about the result.

Hume said: “We watched the game and I couldn’t compliment Dover enough. Alan and I were talking about who we wanted and it was hard to choose between the two.

“Playing Dover would have been good for Kent football. It would have meant a Kent side were guaranteed to be in the 1st Round.

“It would have brought a bigger crowd and buzz to play Dover but we would have been underdogs either way, Dover’s budget is twice ours.”He added: “AFC Wimbledon will be a mammoth task but I think if we play at our absolute best we can win the game.

“They have got 13 or 14 full time players and lots of players that could play at a higher level but I am confident that if we plan in the right way and perform on the day then we can get something.

“They are fourth in Blue Square South and are looking to get promoted and we are a division below but sometimes playing as underdogs can be a better position to be in.”
