Maidstone announced the signing of defender Reiss Greenidge before last night's game at Notts County.

The 6ft 6in centre-back, a Guyana international, was a free agent after leaving League 1 club Bolton Wanderers in the summer.

Greenidge, 26, knows the National League well having spent last season on loan at Barnet, making 24 appearances.

He came through the youth ranks at Arsenal and West Brom, had a brief spell at Ebbsfleet six years ago and has also played for Norwegian club Sogndal.

The defender made his Stones debut at Notts County, impressing manager Hakan Hayrettin, despite a 3-0 defeat against the league leaders.

"I think he did really well," Hayrettin told Stones TV. "I thought he was big, he was strong, he was commanding. He'll only get better.

"He's a big lad, a strong lad and hopefully he'll enjoy his stay here."

Maidstone's winless run in the league is up to eight matches after last night's loss at Meadow Lane.

They held the leaders until the 44th minute when Macaulay Langstaff stabbed home after his header came back off the bar.

Ruben Rodrigues curled in number two from the edge of the box seven minutes into the second half.

Mersin saved a Rodrigues penalty before Cedwyn Scott completed the scoring on 63 minutes.

"I think they're the best team we've played, by far, in my opinion," said Hayrettin.

"I'm never going to knock the boys' hard work and endeavour. We're never going to play them every week, are we?

"I saw good glimpses in the first half and in the second half. I know we lost, this sounds really strange, but I saw positive signs there."

Maidstone start a run of three home matches on Tuesday night when Southend visit the Gallagher.

The clubs haven't met competitively since the 1989/90 season when United did the double over the Shrimpers in the old Division 4, winning 1-0 at Roots Hall and 3-0 at Watling Street.

Southend went on to win automatic promotion, while Maidstone lost to Cambridge in the play-off semi-finals.
