Maidstone United midfielder Dan Sweeney told to make the position his own

Dan Sweeney has been challenged to nail down a place in Maidstone's starting XI after his best performance for the club.

Sweeney was picked over James Rogers in midfield for the 2-2 National League draw against Wrexham.

He justified Jay Saunders' selection with a man-of-the-match display.

Boss Saunders said: "We’ve left Rogo out, who’s a bit unfortunate, and I thought Dan Sweeney was outstanding in there, doing that holding role, I thought he was magnificent.

"I’ve put a bit of pressure on him. He’s been in and out of the team and I just felt at home it was a chance for him.

"He was disciplined, good on the ball, I’d like to see his pass completion rate, I should think it was very high.

"He’s got all the tools to make that his position for a very long time. He’s just got to keep doing that.

"Consistency. When you’re young that’s the key thing, consistency, and if he can get that to his game then he’ll be a good player for us."

Sweeney's midfield partner Jack Paxman was also outstanding against Wrexham.

Saunders added: "For two young lads to go out, I thought they dominated the midfield area against theirs, and they had a lot more experience than us."
