Organisers of a youth football tournament are aiming to make it the best in Europe.
It sounds ambitious but Pro Soccer Academy have been building up to their big moment for two years and want to put on a show.
The PSA Cup will be held at the Victory Academy in Chatham on Sunday, July 16 but it’s been made in Maidstone by Scott Chalmers-Stevens and Craig Smith, who have lived in the town all their lives.
The tournament is fully booked with 120 teams from all over the south east - ranging from under-6 to under-13 - and next year PSA want to expand by making it an international event.
It’s grassroots football with a difference, the centrepiece being a 24sqm giant screen that will show highlights, action replays and pitchside interviews with players.
Anything Barcelona can do, PSA – established by Chalmers-Stevens and Smith eight years ago - can do better.
Chalmers-Stevens said: “We’ve gone to the Barcelona Football Festival six times, we’ve been to Portugal, Belgium, the Amsterdam Cup, we’ve been all round Europe to everyone else’s tournaments, taking little ideas that we’ve liked and added in some fresh ideas that have never been done before – ie, the screen.
“It’s a grassroots tournament in a professional atmosphere and the trophies are huge. We want that wow factor.
“For the kids it’s a unique playing experience because I don’t think there’s any other tournament in England or in Europe that will offer what we’re going to offer in terms of the replays, pitchside interviews, being able to watch themselves on the big screen.
“A lot of effort’s gone into it in terms of the marketing, the research, the organisation, the venue and trying to get as many different teams involved as possible.
“We wanted it to be a big south of England tournament and next year, hopefully, like when we go to Barcelona, we’ll start having international teams coming over and it’ll become an international event.
“That’s realistic - 100%. We’ve got a contact at LA Galaxy in America and they want to bring teams over next year. This year is a platform for a bigger, better one next year.”
Pro Soccer is going from strength to strength with a coaching team including Maidstone United trio Lee Worgan, Jack Paxman and Nicky Southall.
As well as Chalmers-Stevens, who started his career at Watford, and Smith, other coaches include Adam Birchall (ex-Arsenal and now a Gunners academy coach), Dean Rance (Ebbsfleet) and Josh Hare (ex-Gills and Eastbourne).
PSA operate at three levels - development, intermediate and advanced - and have 450 players attending weekly sessions in Kent.
They also work with around 3,000 children in 25 schools.
The biggest success story is striker Harry Smith, who has just won promotion to the Championship with Millwall.
Chalmers-Stevens said: “We’ve had over 50 players sign for pro clubs all over the place, including Arsenal.
“It’s got big quick, but with quality. We’ve not franchised out, we’ve not branched into areas and just dumped coaches there with our badge and our kit.
“Every centre we’ve got, every coach is as good as the next coach but they’re also different.
“It’s important they’re different as well, so we don’t just make a session for one style of player.
“Man for man, the coaching team is as strong as it gets in the south of England and they’re all relevant.
“These aren’t coaches who used to play 50 years ago.”
