Seth Twumasi took his big chance after stepping back into the Maidstone team.
Right-back Twumasi had no complaints after losing his place to Josh Hare following United’s defeat at Leyton Orient last month.
He’d been out of the squad altogether at times but returned to the starting XI at Macclesfield with Hare sidelined by a groin injury.
The former Chelsea man had a brilliant game and with Hare set to be out for a few weeks, he has the chance to make the position his own again.
Twumasi said: “It’s not nice as a player to be missing out but Josh has stepped in and done very well.
“I felt it was justified for Josh to be playing and he showed that by his performances.
“It’s part of football and I accepted that and I just had to support him, give him advice as well and bide my time.”
Stones boss Jay Saunders praised Twumasi’s attitude during his spell out of the side and the former England under-20 man got his rewards at Moss Rose.
Twumasi added: “Every player wants to play all the time but you also have to accept that sometimes you will not be at your best, so the person that’s training well and playing well deserves to play.
“I just had to back him up, just in case there’s injuries or anything like that and continue to train because it’s a long season, there’s plenty of games to play so I knew eventually I’d get a chance.
“Once you get your place back you have to do everything you can to try to stay in there and hopefully I’ve done enough.”
Twumasi’s time out was made easier by his team-mates.
He said: “It’s probably the best changing room I’ve been in. Those that aren’t playing are made to feel welcome.
“Everyone’s in it together. There’s no cliques, which is where problems come from.
“I don’t feel like we’ve got that here. We’ve got potential to go places.”
