Manager-of-the-month Jay Saunders believes Maidstone could be just two wins from safety.
United have gone from the bottom of the form guide to the top after a seven-match unbeaten run.
They’re three points clear of the National League bottom four going into the home match against play-off contenders Barrow on Saturday (3pm) and also have two games in hand on their relegation rivals.
Saunders, named manager-of-the-month for March, said: “It’s nice to be top of the form table but it doesn’t mean a lot.
“We’ve just got to keep plugging away in these last eight games and get a couple more wins as soon as possible.
“You don’t know exactly what you need but I think two more wins and we won’t be far off staying up.
“That gets us to 50 points and then you’re roughly there but it’s a strange league this year.
“We’d be unlucky to go down after the run we’ve been on but we went eight without a win earlier in the season and your form can just as easily turn again.”
Maidstone are likely to be unchanged against a Barrow team who beat them 3-0 last October.
Saunders said: “They’re a very big side and good at what they do.
“They’re having a good season and are up there around the play-offs but I’d like to think if we can deal with them defensively, we’ll be able to cause problems.”
