Charles Banya has spoken for the first time about the moment he was knocked out on the pitch at the Gallagher Stadium.
The Maidstone winger spent two nights in Pembury Hospital after a challenge from Basingstoke keeper Aaron Howe left him with concussion.
A video of the incident, that took place on March 5, has helped the 22-year-old fill in the blanks. United were leading 2-1 through goals from James Rogers and Dumebi Dumaka when Banya was taken out.
He said: “I saw a video of how it happened but I don’t remember it all. The whole thing is a blur. The last thing I can remember was DD scoring. After that, nothing.
“It’s scary to think you can get hit on the head and then not remember anything. One minute we’d scored and the next I’m in hospital with a massive headache, confused and wondering what had happened.”
Banya came round after his first night in hospital and was visited by Maidstone manager Jay Saunders, who showed him the footage.
The winger added: “I regained consciousness around midday on the Sunday, so I was out of it for a long time. When I look back at the video it doesn’t look malicious from the keeper.
“I don’t know what he was trying to do but I don’t blame him for what happened. Jay came to see me and that was great. I appreciated it. We spoke about how the accident happened and he showed me the video."
The former Fulham youngster added: “Everything should be fine. The hospital advised me not to do any contact sport for two or three weeks, which is normal after concussion but hopefully I’ll be back soon because I felt I was getting better with each game and starting to show what I can do."
