A Kings Hill cricketer who made 219 not out in a record stand of 350 joined the club after a chance conversation in the curry house where he works.
Bangladeshi all-rounder Anamul Chowdhury was waiting tables in the Gufaa Raja in Liberty Square when Kings Hill players popped in for a meal.
He offered to play and made an instant impact with scores of 98 and 147 in wins against Rainham and Bobbing Court & Lower Halstow.
His Bobbing score, though, was erased from the records after the Sittingbourne side withdrew from the league. But Chowdhury made up for that with his unbeaten double century against Belnor in the Kent Regional League on Saturday.
He and Shaun McMurray (103 not out) put on 350 for the second wicket as Kings Hill declared on 352-1 and won by 233 runs.
Chowdhury said: “I was working at the Gufaa when some of the players came in for a curry and it went from there. I played Division 1 cricket in Bangladesh before moving to England and my best score back home was 145.”
Kings Hill captain Nick McGeorge can hardly believe his team’s luck after meeting Chowdhury.
He said: “We just got talking in the curry house and he said he could play. You watch him bat and bowl and he’s a great player. The only thing is he has to leave at 6.30pm for work on Saturday, so we have to finish games without him!”
