William Sparrow will take a healthy lead into the final round of the Total Karting Zero Southern Championship.

Sparrow, from Marden, moved a step closer to the summer series title with success in the penultimate round at Thruxton.

The 13-year-old, a pupil at Maidstone Grammar School, won two of three races to move 19 points clear of nearest rival Joel Dixon-Coen in the junior class.

The series finale takes place at the Mansell Raceway in Devon on October 1-2, where double points are at stake.

Sparrow dropped from second on the grid to fourth after a slow start to the opening heat.

It looked like he might end up fourth until an incident involving the two karts in front saw him finish runner-up.

Heat two was more straightforward as Sparrow, again starting second, moved ahead on the first corner and stayed there.

The series leader enjoyed a lights-to-flag victory in the final, finishing 2.845sec clear.

He held the fastest lap for most of the final, which would have gained extra points, only to be pipped towards the end.

Sparrow said: “I now have a good lead overall in the championship and I am looking forward to the final round at Mansell Raceway next month, where double points will be issued for the heats and finals. I can’t wait!”
