Hakan Hayrettin is searching for consistency as Maidstone prepare to face National League leaders Chesterfield.
The Spireites visit the Gallagher Stadium on Saturday (3pm) with United looking to bounce back from a 3-0 defeat at Bromley last weekend.
Maidstone, who sit 15th, have been up and down all season and while a lengthy injury list hasn’t helped, boss Hayrettin wants more from his side.
He questioned their work rate out of possession at Bromley and there are few things that irk him more than that.
“We need to keep working hard,” he said. “Without that ingredient, you can’t do anything.
“At the moment we’re pushing the boys to get into certain positions and they understand that and they know that because they’ve gone out and got results.
“But you can’t go from playing well one minute to playing how we did and letting in the goals we did at Bromley.”
Maidstone will need to be on their game against a Chesterfield side who boast the only unbeaten record in the division, with six wins and three draws.
They have former Gillingham youngster Darren Oldaker pulling the strings in midfield and will bring a big away following to the Gallagher.
“I’ll be asking for everything I ask of them every day - work as hard as you possibly can,” said Hayrettin.
“The National League is an extension of the Football League, it isn’t part-time football, they need to understand that.
“They’re full-time professional footballers and they’ve got to come in and work hard to get us back on track.”
