Marden Cricket Club saw records and landmarks tumble in a thrilling run chase.
The Marden Saints were facing a huge challenge of 273 runs off 35 overs set by visiting Telston and Mereworth.
After a stuttering start, Marden’s Jim Piper, recovering from a knee injury, hobbled out and was soon joined by future star Bruno Hagan, aged just 14.
The two set about the bowling, maintaining the run rate on a fast outfield with a blend of powerful hits and well-placed strokes.
The experienced Piper led the charge to their respective fifties and beyond.
Hagan, coached in recent years by Piper himself, was watchful, attacking and composed throughout.
The partnership totalled well over 250 with both making unbeaten centuries in the friendly victory. Piper finished on 127 and Hagan 110.
Marden Cricket Club date back to 1789 and Hagan is their youngest senior-team centurion on record.
“It was a total pleasure batting with Bruno and to be out in the middle with him as he made his maiden century was very special,” said Piper.
“This bodes very well for Marden cricket as we develop youth talent.”
Hagan said: “I was daunted going out but enjoyed myself and will never forget getting my first hundred.”
