A burglar who was tracked down after leaving his DNA at crime scenes has been jailed for two years and three months.

Nathan Norman, 30, stole thousands of pounds' worth of jewellery and electrical goods, after forcing his way through patio doors into a house in Police Station Road, West Malling, on February 25.

He left a spade in the garden after the owner returned home to find the property completely ransacked.

Norman, of Ewell Avenue, West Malling, also tried to break into a house in Barming, on October 13, where he again left a stolen spade in the garden.

The discarded tools were able to provide enough forensic evidence to link Norman to the offences.

On January 22 he pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary and was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Neil Buckle said: "Burglary is a terrible crime that can leave an emotional scar on the victims affected, many of whom return to find their homes ransacked and personal belongings stolen.

"Nathan Norman demonstrated scant regard for their welfare when he selfishly targeted their homes and on one occasion rifled through valuables he had no right to be anywhere near.

"The DNA found on the spades he used proved he was involved in both offences, and I am pleased he is off the streets and behind bars where he can cause no further harm to law-abiding members of the public."
