An MP has called Kent County Council (KCC) 'incompetent' after a road highways bosses promised to fix three years ago once again flooded after heavy downpours this morning.

Tracey Crouch, MP for Chatham and Aylesford, made the comments after police closed the A20 London Road near the Quarry Wood Industrial Estate at 6.45am when surface water made the road impassable.

Residents say the situation was 'carnage' with motorists driving on the wrong side of the road and two vehicles became stranded near Homebase.

Kent Highways engineers are at the scene and one lane has been closed while a tanker is used to pump out the excess water.

The site has been a hotspot for flooding for years, and any sign of heavy rainfall like this morning proves too much for the drainage system to handle.

In June last year, a prankster even floated scores of yellow rubber ducks on the floodwater to draw attention to the problem.

In January 2018, Ms Crouch received a letter from KCC which explained they were working to resolve the problems by 'the next financial year'.

But more than three years later, flooding is still a major issue.

The former sports minister says she will be writing to KCC to ask why it failed to fulfil its promise.

She added: "Back in January 2018 I was promised that work was scheduled for completion by the end of the financial year.

"This has not happened and unsurprisingly I, and fellow residents and motorists, am extremely fed up.

"KCC’s incompetence in resolving this issue has led to valuable police resources being wasted."

Torrential rain caused rush-hour havoc on Kent's roads with several crashes on busy routes, widespread flooding and rail services disrupted.

A KCC spokesperson said: “Tankers have been sent to flooding near Quarry Wood Industrial Estate in Aylesford to clear the remaining surface water.

“KCC is acutely aware of the pressure localised and extremely heavy downpours can put on the highway drainage system in this area.

“Plans for work on the A20, which include steps to alleviate this localised issue, are being progressed. We are committed to doing everything we can to maintain our network in the interim.”

There are also plans to build a new roundabout at the nearby junction, but no date is set for that work to begin.
