A borough council is set to increase its fines for dropping litter in a bid to clear clutter from its streets.

Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council plans to increase the fixed penalty notices issued by its environmental offences from £80 to £100 next financial year.

If the offender pays within 10 days this would be reduced to £65.

This would be the first change in the charge since 2006, brought on by new legislation from the government which allows local authorities to raise their penalties.

The government launched a litter strategy with an ambition for residents to be "the first generation to leave the natural environment of England in a better state than it found it" in April 2017.

Rather than buy new anti-litter signs, the council would amend the advertised maximum charge with stickers if the plans are approved.

Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council estimate there will be an income of £6,250 from fixed penalty notices next financial year.

These plans will be discussed by the council's street scene and environment services advisory oard on Monday.

The charges will take effect from April 1 if approved by the cabinet on February 14.
