A woman who died in a three-car crash near East Peckham has been named.

Mildred Matete, from Ashford, was a passenger in a black Toyota Cruiser which collided with a silver Renault and then a blue Nissan Micra on Seven Mile Lane near the junction with Martin's Lane last Wednesday.

The 43-year-old died at the scene.

The incident is the latest in a series of serious accidents and near misses on the A228, a long, relatively straight stretch of road which links Mereworth with East Peckham to the south.

On Wednesday, December 6, exactly a week before, 79-year-old John Stewart from Brenchley was hit by a car and killed, less than a mile away.

In October, a Ford Focus ploughed off the road into a back garden near the junction with Beach Road, sparking concerns from Sarah-Jane Berwick, 52, who said her grandchildren could have been killed.

She pleaded with Kent County Council (KCC) to install a barrier over concerns about speeding.

Government data shows there have been 17 crashes on Seven Mile Lane during the five years to 2016 – of these, two were serious.

A KCC spokesman said: “We are concerned to hear of the crash on Seven Mile Lane and our thoughts are with the friends and families involved.

“We analyse crash data supplied by Kent Police for any trends that can be identified and potentially addressed by investing in safety measures.”

An inquest into Ms Matate's death will be opened next week at Archbishop's Palace in Maidstone.

Any witnesses with information should call the serious collision investigation unit on 01622 798 538 quoting reference number KH/DJ/285/17.
