Almost 100 years of memories spanning five generations of one family are to be found in a terraced house in Snodland.

Number 41 in Malling Road hasn’t been on the market since it was bought by Len and Beatrice Barnes in November 1915, but it’s now ready for someone else to create a new legacy.

The two-bedroom house was where the couple raised their son Gordon and three daughters, Freda, Hilda and Gwendoline, known as Gwen.

Howard Knott, son of Hilda, lived there for a short time but it was his aunt, Freda, who kept the house after his grandparents died, until her own death in December. She was 99 years old.

The 70-year-old, who is in charge of selling the property which has meant so much to the family, said: “Freda lived there all of her life. I lived there at some point when I was a baby but then we moved nearby to Queens Avenue in Snodland.

“My grandfather’s brother Roger lived in it for some years between the First and Second World Wars, so there were three adults and four children living in one property with no bathroom and no electricity.”

Mr Knott attended St Katherine’s Primary School, in Katherine’s Lane, before joining the Royal Air Force when he was 16.

He recalls his grandfather was self-employed and had a contract with British Rail to collect items from the former railway yard, off High Street, which now a community garden project, and distribute them to the town’s mill and other businesses.

Mr Knott moved to Essex in 1970, and his mother and aunt Gwen also relocated to the county.

He would drive the sisters to visit Freda at the family home, sometimes taking his own children and grandchildren with them.
