A family narrowly escaped serious injury when yobs smashed the roof of their moving car with an object thrown from a bridge.

Olly Swann was driving along the A228 Ashton Way near West Malling when there was a sudden crash and a shower of glass as the panoramic roof of the Mercedes estate was smashed by the unidentified projectile.

The object thrown from a bridge smashed a huge hole in the roof of the family's car

His wife Kelly and 13-year-old son Charlie were also in the car at the time, as the family drove home to Tonbridge following the teenager's football match that morning.

Describing the terrifying moment their car was attacked at around 12.15pm on Sunday, the 45-year-old management consultant said: "It exploded on impact, but if it had come into the car one of us might not be here to talk about it.

"I was aware someone was on the bridge, and then all of a sudden there was a massive crash and a gush of air and glass flying everywhere.

"My son bore the brunt of it, with lots of scratches on his thighs as he was still in his football kit.

"I looked in my rear view mirror and just wanted to check the people driving behind me weren't going to slam into the us. I saw two boys on bikes disappearing off the bridge."

"It is only by chance that the occupants did not suffer serious injuries..."

When they got home the family found their clothes were covered in small pieces of broken glass, but thankfully no one suffered any serious injuries.

Insp Lizzie Jones, of the Tonbridge and Malling community safety unit, said: "The sunroof of this vehicle was smashed and it is only by chance that the occupants did not suffer serious injuries.

"We do not know what the object was that struck the vehicle and are appealing for information from witnesses.

"We would also like to hear from anybody who saw two children with cycles on the bridge at the time of the incident or anybody who knows who they might be."
