A petition has been set up against plans for a new supermarket.

People in Ditton and surrounding areas plan to challenge proposals for a Lidl at the junction for Bradbourne Lane on London Road.

The planning application has received 17 objections so far, with people stating concerns about a lack of staff parking, increased traffic and more competition at the expense of smaller businesses.

Tony and Maralyn Mulcuck, of Bradbourne Lane, organised a petition calling on Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council to refuse the application.

Mrs Mulcuck, 74, and her husband, 86, already have more than 300 signatures and say those who wish to sign it can visit the parish office on Kilnbarn Road in Ditton.

The supermarket will replace the Maidstone Kia garage which closed its doors in February.

It is suggested the shop will employ 40 members of staff and have 77 parking spaces, including six disability bays.

Others who have objected say the number is inadequate and said there were issues with Kia employees parking on the pavement.

But an assessment by transport consultant SCP concluded the number of spaces was suitable. The report also found no evidence the chain store would affect the flow of traffic but neighbours disagree.

Numerous objections listed congestion as a major worry.

They fear the increased numbers of cars would turn narrower roads in the area into ‘rat-runs’.

Others queried whether another supermarket was needed - there is a Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer and Aldi in Aylesford, a Morrisons in Larkfield and a Tesco in New Hythe.

Noise fears were also expressed, particularly from deliveries.

Others suggested the site should be used for housing. The proposal is awaiting a decision.
