Strong winds caused a bonfire which got quickly out of hand to spread across a grassed area and bushes, fire crews say.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to Broadwater Road in West Malling just before 5.30pm yesterday afternoon to reports of an out of control bonfire.

Fire crews tackled the bonfire

One fire engine and a bulk water carrier attended, and crews used hose reel jets to prevent further fire spread and put the blaze out.

No one was injured.

Following the incident, firefighters are urging people to always keep bonfires to a manageable size and to build them well away from greenery, fences and property.

They are also reminding people to stay with the bonfire until it's fully cooled.
