Images from the scene show long queues of traffic on the London-bound carriageway.

At around 4.35pm the outside lane was coned off to allow recovery vehicles and national highways to work on clearing the obstruction.

From around 5.15pm all lanes have reopened but traffic is still queuing in the area.
