Whenever a community stalwart passes away, it is normal for mourners to turn out with flowers and cards.

But the tributes left in Birling Road, Snodland, this week were not to mark the death of a person – but a cat.

Harry, the friendly neighbourhood moggy, was so loved by locals that when he met his maker they turned out to honour him.

Rebecca Ritchie, landlady of The Monks Head in Constitution Hill, said the black-coated tom was a favourite with her regulars.

The 35-year-old said: “We’ve only been here a few years, but in that time he’s always been around.

“I’m not sure which house he came from, but he used to sit out in the road all the time and defy the odds when cars flew by.

“He was a lovely little cat and everyone knew him, especially the children walking to school.

“He always used to come up to you for a pat, he was just one of those cats. We were really sad when we heard he had passed away so we thought we would put a tribute on the lamppost where he used to lie around. It is very sad.”

It is thought the pet died after injuries sustained in an alleged attack involving two dogs and their owners. The incident is understood to have been reported to the police.

Children have left cards in the road Harry used to frequent

As well as flowers and a card signed by the pub’s locals, children have left heartfelt messages. One said: “Harry, thank you so much for letting us know you. Sweet dreams.”

Another said: “Thank you for always seeing me after school, before school and I miss you.”
