The updated war memorial for Leybourne, revealing extra names for those with links to the village who fought and died during the First World War, will be unveiled on Remembrance Sunday.

Leybourne Parish Council has been working on a project to restore and update the memorial for some months and it will culminate on Sunday, November 9.

To explain the lives of the young men whose names are included, the council has also arranged an exhibition, which will be held the day before, on Saturday, November 8, between 11am and 2pm at the village hall.

Organisers have researched the stories behind the names and also details of what Leybourne was like between 1914 and 1918, including information on the Leybourne Army Camp.

The unveiling ceremony will be held at 11am by Cllr Sarah Hohler, a former Leybourne resident and county council member for the area, after a service at St Peter and St Paul’s Church, at 10am.

Both the exhibition and the memorial renovation have been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund – World War One: Then and Now Programme.
