Police are warning people to be wary of bogus callers after a man tried to gain entry into a pensioner's house, saying he needed to inspect her water meter.

When the woman refused to let him in and called the water company he was supposed to represent, she was told they hadn’t sent anyone.

It happened in St Mary's Road, Tonbridge shortly before 12.50pm yesterday.

The police were called, and officers carried out house to house enquiries.

The man is described as being of medium height and aged in his 20s to 30s. He was slim, had fair hair and was wearing a bright orange high visibility jacket.

Sgt Dougal Bell said: "There is always a possibility that this man may have been acting honestly, however the home owner did the right thing and called the police.

"I would remind residents to always check the identity of anyone who calls at your door and don’t be afraid to close your door and leave them waiting outside if you need to telephone to make checks."
