A whole year group at a primary school have been told to isolate until next week after a child tested positive for Covid-19.

A Year 6 pupil from Valley Invicta Primary School, in Teapot Lane, Aylesford , contracted the virus.

A letter sent out to parents this morning made them aware of the situation and advised them the school has been following national guidance.

It said: "We have identified your child has been in close contact with the affected child.

"In line with national guidance we recommend that your child now stay at home and self-isolate until September 18.

"This period of time takes into consideration that your child has already completed 7 of the 14 day recommendation because of the time lapse between the identification and testing of this individual case; hence they only need to isolate for 7 days.

"We are asking you to do this to reduce the further spread of Covid-19 to others in the community."

"I don't feel like it's safe enough for the kids to be back in school."

One annoyed father revealed his daughter was in the same class as the infected pupil and the whole family have had to self-isolate until they can get a test.

Dave Morley, of Abery Drive, Aylesford, said: "We're all sick now and recently found out about the positive test, so now we're trying to get four home tests to see if it's Covid."

The 32-year-old, who has two daughters aged 10 and 2 explained his family began feeling unwell over the weekend.

"My missus had to come home from work yesterday sick," he said.

"I don't feel like it's safe enough for the kids to be back in school. It's one case of Covid now, but then before long it will be more.

"I didn't want my child back in school in the first place, but the government told me I had too."

Mr Morley questioned why some schools weren't making it compulsory for pupils to wear face masks and suggested the government "closes schools until next year and try again".

He added his family haven't had any luck getting a free test and have been trying all day.

A statement from Valley Invicta Academies Trust, which runs the school, said: "Valley Invicta Academies Trust (VIAT) can confirm a child in Year 6 from Valley Invicta Primary School at Aylesford has tested positive for COVID-19.

"The pupil, and their year group, will now quarantine, following advice from Public Health England.

"Home learning and live lessons are being made available to all those pupils affected.

"Since all pupils returned to school earlier this month, the Trust’s Risk Assessment, which is based on Government and Public Health England guidelines, has been strictly adhered to.

"The wellbeing, health and safety of our pupils and our staff is our absolute priority and we will continue to do everything possible to protect and support them during these challenging times."

Last week several schools in Sittingbourne had to send hundreds of children home following positive tests.
