If you feel moved by the Remembrance services this coming weekend, there is a very practical way you can help ex-servicemen.
Royal British Legion Industries, which provides both accommodation and employment for ex-servicemen and their families at its village in Aylesford, is on a fundraising mission.
The charity needs to raise a further £600,000 to complete the new Centenary Village which is under construction off Hermitage Lane.
It has regular supporters who are prepared to match-fund pound for pound any donations up to £300,000, so the charity’s aim now is to raise £300k.
The house-builder, Barratt Homes, has kick-started the campaign with a £75,000 donation.
But any gift large or small is welcome and will be worth double to RBLI.
The RBLI Centenary Village is a £26 million development of purpose-built homes, assisted living accommodation and family homes, together with a yet-to-be-built state-of-the-art community centre at its heart.
The new appeal is being supported by some of the country’s most senior veterans, including the former head of the Army, Lord Dannatt, and General Sir Gordon Messenger.
Lisa Farmer, the CEO of RNLI, said: “We want to help even more veterans and that’s why our Centenary Village is so vital.
“Thanks to our supporters, we’ve already raised an amazing £26 million, but now need to raise £600,000 for the final phase.”
David Thomas, chief executive of Barratt Developments, said: “We are proud to support RBLI with our donation. The country needs the Centenary Village to deliver the support our veterans deserve, changing people’s lives.”
So far the Centenary Village has delivered 79 homes for veterans but the final phase will include a training and welfare centre, community cafe and wheelchair-accessible gym.
