A head teacher has been banned from driving after being caught behind the wheel while more than twice the alcohol limit.

Gary Vyse, who is at the helm of the Hundred of Hoo Academy, crashed his car on Chaucer Way in Larkfield at 11pm on Wednesday, October 12.

Police were called to the scene following reports the 35-year-old's year-old BMW 428i was blocking the road.

He was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and later gave a reading of 83 micrograms of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35 micrograms.

Vyse – who is also the chief executive of The Williamson Trust, which includes six schools in Medway – hit the headlines in June after banning false eyelashes, fake tan, heavy foundation and lipstick, telling parents: “School is not a fashion parade,” and adding he favours “no excuses discipline”.

Following its most recent Ofsted inspection the Rochester school was rated ‘good’ across the board with ‘outstanding features’.

Appearing at Maidstone Magistrates’ Court, smartly dressed Vyse, of Stangate Road, Rochester, admitted drink driving.

He was disqualified for 18 months and ordered to pay £1,455 within 28 days.

After sentencing Mark Tucker, chairman of the bench, told Vyse: “I’m sure we won’t be seeing you here again.”
