A controversial planning application for a new car park at West Malling train station has been withdrawn in a victory for campaigners, days before councillors were set to make a decision.
The plan, to provide 212 bays on farmland at Lucks Hill, had been recommended for approval by the council’s planning officers and work had already begun to clear the site in anticipation of gaining approval.
But before the decisive meeting of Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council’s planning committee yesterday, land owner Guy Kemsley removed the application due to objections.
A letter to the authority said Mr Kemsley was now reviewing his position.
He had previously stated that there was a pressing need for increased commuter access to the station, adding to the 600 spaces currently available.
But while Kent County Council and Network Rail were happy with the idea, it was opposed by residents, as well as the parish council.
More Park Catholic Primary School opposite the site was particularly against the proposals due to concerns about increased traffic and the threat to pupils’ safety during pick-up and drop-off times.
There were also fears that the development would increase the risk of flooding, something which caused the school to shut for several days last October.
Five Year 6 pupils organised and delivered a 180-signature petition against the proposed facility along with a copy of the school’s newspaper to Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council’s planning department on the final day of public consultation in April.
Head teacher Annemarie Whittle was relieved to hear of the withdrawal.
She said: "Our concern has always been about the safety of the children in our care and it would appear that after careful consideration of our concerns and the significant number of objections, the applicant has obviously recognised that the plans were not in everyone’s best interest.
"Our thanks must also be mentioned for the amazing support from parents as well as the local community and West Malling Parish Council."
